Catrina Patton and Jasmyne Jackson, University of Michigan students in Ann Arbor, were among the five students who will receive a $1,000 book award scholarship from the General Motors Minority Dealers Association and a $1,000 matching scholarship from the Bill Perkins Automotive Group.
Former president and current board member of the General Motors Minority Dealers Association, Bill Perkins, president of Bill Perkins Automotive Group in Ann Arbor, assisted in making the educational dreams come true for five Michigan area students by providing $1,000 matching scholarships. Perkins distributed applications to students at his three Metro Detroit area dealerships, Merollis Chevrolet in Eastpointe, Taylor Chevrolet in Taylor, and Jim Bradley Pontiac Buick GMC in Ann Arbor. The Bill Perkins Automotive Groups offers new Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick and GMC brand vehicles as well as a variety of used vehicles.

"At the Bill Perkins Automotive Group, we firmly believe that access to education is the key to success. This year, I wanted to offer an incentive for students who obtained their scholarship application from one of our dealerships and received a scholarship award from the GMMDA," said Perkins. "The GMMDA scholarship program is just one example of our commitment to the Metro Detroit community."

A GMMDA member since 1993, Perkins began his career with General Motors in 1972 with the Pontiac Motors Division and secured his first dealership appointment in Kansas City, MO in 1988. His ten years of service on the GMMDA Board of Directors includes one term as the 7th president and a two-year term as treasurer. He has also served on the GM National Dealer Advisory Council, GM Minority Dealer Advisory Council, and National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD) Executive Board. Currently, Perkins is the vice president of the Detroit Auto Dealers Association (DADA).

The five students who will receive a $1,000 book award scholarship from the GMMDA and a $1,000 matching scholarship from the Bill Perkins Automotive Group are: Trevor Gamble, a senior at the University of Michigan - Flint; Catrina Patton, a sophomore at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor; Willena Nkanga, a senior at Wayne State University - Detroit; Jasmyne Jackson, a freshmen at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor; and Heather Bishop, a high school senior at Andover High School - Bloomfield Hills. These students were among a group of 50 students selected to receive a book award scholarship from this national program, which has become increasingly competitive over the years. "

Over 3,800 students representing 50 states applied for this year's program," said GMMDA Executive Director, Marjorie Staten. "Our dealers truly believe that access to a quality education is vital to the success of minority youth. Our scholarship winners are among the finest students in the country. In addition to the 50 book award scholarships, the GMMDA also award twelve students a $2,500 scholarship."
